There are more than 5 good reasons to charter a yacht in Gibraltar but as I’m sure your time is as limited as the ours, I will list the first five that occur to us!
High on the list should be the weather. As I write this, sat at a cafe table overlooking the harbour, sipping my second cappuccino of the afternoon, the sun is beating down on my T-shirt clad shoulders and the breeze is fizzing through the spreaders of the yachts in the marina. This is Gibraltar! With 300 days of sunshine every year, what’s not to like?
Lets face it, many of us prefer to sail in the warmer climes of the Med and West Indies. It sure beats rainy Portsmouth, but it’s not just the weather that makes this area a great sailing location. Where else can you leave Gibraltar and within a short day’s sail have the chance of seeing whales and dolphins en route to the North African ports of Ceuta, Morocco and the Spanish Costas on your doorstep? See: Where we Sail.
Gibraltar is an intriguing place with a long and glorious history. The Rock is reputed to be the remnants of one of the two pillars toppled by Hercules according to Greek mythology. You can’t get much older than that. As well as being a strategic Royal Navy port defending the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.
4. Short Flight Time
Just over two hours will get you here from all over the UK to Gibraltar on cheap flights run by Monarch, Easyjet, and British Airways. No jet lag, limited time in the air and only one time zone from the UK. The best part is we are only 5 minutes taxi ride from Gibraltar airport! See: How to Get Here.
5. Jolly Parrot
Yup. We’re here. What better reason than to charter one of our yachts out of Gibraltar!
All you need is an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) / RYA Day Skipper ticket (from us ideally - so we know where you’ve been!) and you could be chartering a yacht for a week or weekend exploring the Western Mediterranean.
