Jimmy Cornell is a recognised icon of the ocean cruising world, and rightly so. He has written dozens of books over a lifetime at sea and his level of knowledge is considerable. Cornell’s Ocean Atlas, a joint effort by the man himself and his son, Ivan. The book includes uptodate weather routing information for cruising sailors and should be a fundamental component of your cruiser’s bookshelf. It contains practical information on prevailing wind and currents in all the World’s Oceans compiled over many years.
Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Boat by Peter Berman.
As the name suggests, another practical tombe of use to the aspiring ocean cruiser. The book guides the reader through the considerations necessary when buying and equipping a yacht for ocean cruising.
Sail Away: How to Escape the Rat Race and Live the Dream by Nicola Rodriguez.
Less practical and more inspirational, this book will appeal to the young or middle aged tempted to give it all up and find something more fulfilling. But be careful. It might just push you over the edge!
Around the World Alone by Joshua Slocum.
Now well over a century old, this classic was written by a man from North America, a retired ship’s captain, who found an old timber hulk in a reed bed and proceeded to rebuild and refit her and then sail her, single handed, around the World. Joshua Slocum was the first man known to have sailed his gaff rigged vessel single handed around the World, as the 19th Century waned. His easy going tales of Indians, Gales and sheltering below in front of a log burner whilst North Atlantic Gales blew him swiftly to the West Coast of Europe are both mesmerizing and addictive.
