Best books for sailing and navigation
There are lots of great books on sailing and navigation, but here are a few we thoroughly recommend.
Reeds Skipper’s Handbook
A concise pocket guide that does a great job at covering pretty much everything you’d ever need to know as a sailor. A great little book now in its sixth edition. It fits nicely into a small rucksack and it might be all you need for helping you when your memory fails you.
Illustrated Navigation
As the name suggests, this is a relatively simple and easily understood book for students starting their skippering ‘career’. The book is written by Ivar Dedekam, the author of several other very user-friendly sailing books.It covers navigation in all its forms.
RYA Day Skipper Handbook
Probably essential reading for those candidates looking to complete the RYA Day Skipper course. The book is short, well illustrated and easy to read and understand.
A Seaman’s Guide to the Rule of the Road
Perhaps a little dry, but if my last couple of weeks on the water have illustrated anything to me, it’s that this book should be read and re-read by all those venturing out onto the briney!
