Can I take my RYA Day Skipper Practical Course without first passing my Day Skipper Theory Exam?

Many students ask us if they can take the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course here in Gibraltar, without first passing the RYA Day Skipper Theory Exam.  Strictly speaking, a student can complete the practical Day Skipper Course without the Theory element. However, in practice, the vast majority of students will be unable to pass the course without a good working knowledge of the Day Skipper Theory Course Syllabus.

Our RYA Day Skipper Practical Course is run ‘on the water’ over 5 days and examined by one of our RYA qualified instructors on a continual training and assessment basis. Therefore, without a good knowledge of the theory at the beginning of the course, you are placing yourself at a distinct disadvantage. The time allocated is sufficient to cover the Day Skipper Practical Course Syllabus but there is not enough time to cover the Theory Course Syllabus as well.

We strongly suggest that all student candidates planning on taking their RYA Day Skipper Practical first study the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course. We can offer both on a timetable to suit you. If you are in a hurry, ask about our RYA Day Skipper Fast Track Course!
