What is an RYA Training Centre and Why You Should Use One.

An RYA training centre is an accredited sailing school that has been assessed by and is regularly inspected by the Royal Yachting Association in order to ensure common standards of competence, training and safety.

Only accredited schools (training centres) may use the RYA branding and teach and examine the courses for which they are accredited. This includes the RYA Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean certification process, although RYA Ocean and RYA Offshore certificates are only available to candidates after they have achieved the minimum criteria required to undertake the rigorous, external examinations set by externally appointed third-party examiners, appointed by the RYA.

By using a training centre that is RYA accredited you can be assured that your teachers and the vessels upon which you are taught are appropriately qualified and of the proper specification.

For example, on-the-water instructors must hold a commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate and an RYA Cruising Instructor qualification, as a minimum. They will have passed a medical within the last 2 - 5 years, dependent on their area of operation and be trained in first aid and survival at sea, as well as having specific training in the delivery of the RYA course syllabi.

The boats used by an accredited school must be properly coded and be specified for their area of operation, including regularly inspected safety equipment.

All RYA training centres are regularly audited by the RYA in order to ensure that teaching standards are maintained.  Accredited schools must properly document their courses, with all courses first being approved by the RYA. They must have carefully prepared Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and these must address and include detailed risk assessments and health and safety considerations for all aspects of the school and the protection of its staff and students.

The RYA training provided by accredited RYA schools is recognised throughout the world, with the RYA Day Skipper automatically qualifying UK nationals for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) required in most EU states. The RYA Yachtmaster certificate is recognised worldwide and by the MCA as a valued qualification for professional skippers and crew working on appropriately coded, British-flagged vessels anywhere in the world.
