Why learn to sail in Gibraltar?

After acquiring the sailing bug, most people decide that a formal qualification might be a good idea. Especially if they want to charter a yacht with friends or family. Most reputable schools in Europe and the West Indies will require the skipper has either an RYA Day Skipper qualification and / or an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

There are many schools in the UK that can offer RYA Sailing Courses, but the downsides are numerous. For a start, in order to enjoy a week or two sailing in the Mediterranean, you first have to undertake a couple of weeks training under cold, wet and grey skies in the UK. The other problem with training in the UK is that there are some specific techniques that you’ll find essential for the Mediterranean cruising sailor that may well not be addressed in the UK. For example, stern-to mooring or customs procedures.

The Sunny Mediterranean therefore seems like the obvious choice for the sunseeker looking to enjoy every minute of their time on the water, right? Well, no, not completely.

You see, the RYA syllabus is taught in the Mediterranean but in order to obtain the prized RYA Day Skipper Certificate you must undertake a course in tidal waters, thus excluding most of the Mediterranean from your shopping list. Thankfully, there is a solution.

Gibraltar, just a short flight from the UK, benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate, a change of scenery, with an exotic cruising area all within a day’s sail, including British Gibraltar, Spain and the North African continent. See 'Where we Sail' for more information.

You can study the RYA Day Skipper Tidal Course in a warm climate whilst also enjoying a varied cruising area. You will learn everything you need to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean or further afield and you’ll do it in a Mediterranean climate, rather than under the grey, drizzle of a UK winter. What’s not to like?!
