RYA Start Yachting Syllabus

RYA Start Yachting Aim: To provide a short introduction for novices to sail cruising.   By the end of this 2 day course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework, and be aware of safety on board.  

Knowledge of sea terms and parts of the boat, her rigging and sails.

Ropework

  • Ability to tie the following knots: figure of eight, round turn and two half hitches
  • Ability to secure a rope to a cleat
  • Ability to use winches and jamming cleats
  • Understands the correct use of a bowline

Underway

  • Knowledge of sailing a yacht on all points of sail
  • Can steer a yacht under sail or power

Rules of the Road

  • Can keep an efficient lookout at sea

Meteorology

  • Understands where to obtain a weather forecast

Man Overboard Recovery

  • Understands the action to be taken as crew to recover a man overboard
  • Understands the effects of cold water shock on a casualty

Clothing and Equipment

  • Undetstands good practice for the weating of safety harnesses, life jackets and personal buoncy aids

Emergency Equipment and Precautions

  • Understands the hazards on board a yacht
  • Understands the Actions to be taken in the event of an emergency
