Professional Practices & Responsbilities (PPR) is a compulsary online course for new and revalidating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.
In the commercial world you are professional seafarer, whatever your job is on board. You could be doing anything from yacht delivery, crewing on a superyacht or running a superyacht! You are no different to the captain of a cruise liner. You have a duty of care to crew, to passengers, and to other water users and you will be held to account if things go wrong.
The RYA / PPR (Professional Practices & Responsibilities) course will introduce you to relevant legislation applicable to the them, including SOLAS, COSWoP, MARPOL, Flag State, Port State Authorities and the Code of Practice.
What experience do I need?
No experience is necessary. This course is essential if you are wanting to have your RYA / MCA qualification commercially endorsed.
Course content:
The PPR is a course deliverd on the RYA Interactive Platform.
- How you fit into the professional maritime world
- Importance of correct manning
- Keeping skills up to date
- Safe management of commercial vessels
- The compulsary carriage and maintenance of safety equipment
- How to create and implement risk control
Course schedule:
This online course gives you the flexibility to work through it at your own pace. This course takes approiximately 6-8 hours to complete.
On completion of the course, you'll have the opportunity to practice with mock assessments before opening the final graded online assessment. The graded assessment is split into two sections each with a maximum time limit of 1 hour.
On successful completion of the assessments, you will be able to print your PPR certificate and send it off to the RYA (with other supporting documents) to get your qualification commercially endorsed.

We spent a wonderful 11 days in November 2021 with Jolly Parrot. I completed the Coastal Skipper Combined course and my wife the Comp Crew. Instructors Flipper, IanG, Hailey, and Tom were all exceptional in their own unique way and we came away with more rounded skills and knowledge as a result of their patient teaching methods. Clive and Rachel did a fabulous job of shuffling schedules and boats to accommodate our different experience levels. Expect to be challenged on the Coastal Skipper course! We made some abiding memories, some long-term connections and friends, and hope to return soon for the next challenge maybe a mile-builder.
