Recommended reading for the RYA Day Skipper Course

If you are about to start on your journey towards RYA Day Skipper you’ll need to make some preparations. The RYA Practical Course is best undertaken after you have studied for and passed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course. Trying to grasp the all the practical skills necessary to pass your Practical Course, whilst also trying to master the theoretical side of navigation, weather and seamanship is not recommended.

In fact, before you attend either the theory course or the practical course, we recommend some reading. This will give you a real advantage and make your courses better value and far more productive.

The course covers basic seamanship, yacht and crew management, passage planning, pilotage and applied meteorology. You will also need to know some basic knots although you are likely to know these from your RYA Competent Crew Course.

There are a myriad of titles aimed at the novice skipper. Amongst them there are a few that stand out. We recommend that you try to read all or some of the following prior to attending your course:
