What is the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) Course?

If you wish to skipper or crew a commercial vessel, you will require a commercial endorsement to your RYA Day Skipper, RYA Coastal Skipper or RYA Yachtmaster qualification.

In addition to other courses and tests, you will be required to take the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course prior to being granted your commercial endorsement and again at every five-yearly review.

The course is broken down into four modules:

  • Commercial environment - how you fit into the professional maritime world.
  • People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
  • Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  • Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

It is important that you understand that as a commercially endorsed qualified person you have serious responsibilities. You must abide by the codes set out by The UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and failure to do so can result in very serious penalties.

The Professional Practices and Responsibilities course takes between 6 - 8 hours and can be taken remotely.
