That’s right. One week! Well, one week away from work anyway!
The course begins with four days of intensive classroom-based theory following the RYA Day Skipper Theory syllabus. One of our RYA instructors will teach you all you need to know to navigate and manage a yacht and crew safely to Day Skipper Theory level. The course ends with a short examination before you move on to the RYA Day Skipper practical course.
On the last evening of your theory course you move onto your training yacht where you’ll begin a five day practical course aimed at building on and adding to the theory you’ve just learnt. Successful completion of this course will lead to RYA Day Skipper Practical Certification - and all with just 5 days away from the office and two weekends!
The big advantage to linking both courses is that you not only save a day in the classroom, but you arrive on board fresh and full of knowledge - ready to build upon the core principles. There simply isn’t time to forget much or go ‘rusty’. And don’t worry, we still cover the entire theory syllabus. We just see great benefit in putting that 4 days of theory into practice as soon as possible.
Our shore-based and water-based instructors liaise with each other on course transition - to ensure continuity of training! The course is intensive but fun and, given our location based on Gibraltar’s Queensway Quay, there is plenty to do after hours too. A sundowner in one of the many restaurants and bars overlooking the harbour is a great way to decompress with your fellow students before dinner, although don’t be surprised is conversation swiftly turns to three point fixes and the definition of cross track error!
Our location in the Bay of Gibraltar allows us to safely explore the busy shipping lanes in the Strait or night passages in challenging terrain around the Bay. We may edge out into the Atlantic Ocean or cross to the African continent on passage. We may even hop up the Spanish Coast, taking advantage of the many attractive ports on offer.
See: Where We Sail
As a Day Skipper student, you’ll take it in turns passage planning and running the deck, leaving port and coming alongside. You’ll also get involved with marina protocol and customs procedures as we pass from country to country, overseen at every stage by one of our experienced RYA Sailing Instructors.
Morocco, Spain and Gibraltar are all within an easy day sail and with over 300 days of sunshine a year there really is no better way for a competent crew to train for and obtain their RYA Day Skipper qualification than by way of our nine day fast track Day Skipper Course.
If you aren’t yet competent crew why not check out or two week course aimed at the complete novice looking to fast track their Day Skipper qualification?
