Recommended reading for Competent Crew students

If you are about to start an RYA Competent Crew Course in the Mediterranean or our 14 day Novice to RYA Day Skipper course it would be prudent to do a little preparatory reading to get the most from your time on the water. But where to start?

There are many good texts on the subject but as a RYA Competent Crew candidate it would be easy to end up over reaching the syllabus. The competent sailor must know a variety of skills; not just how to sail a boat, but it’s probably better to stick to the basics in terms of pre-course reading and build on your new found knowledge thereafter.

We suggest you read the excellent paperback learning aid RYA Competent Crew which is available from us directly or on Amazon. The book covers the RYA Competent Crew Syllabus and is well illustrated and an easy read.

Additional reading would cover knot tying and perhaps a book on sail trim. There are several very good books on weather and navigation but that is probably better left until you have grasped the basics.
