Recommended preparation for the RYA Day Skipper course

There is a requirement that candidates for the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course will have no less than 5 days and 100 nautical miles sailing experience logged prior to course start, with 4 hours sailed at night.

In addition, practical course candidates are strongly advised to take the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course prior to attending the Practical Course. The RYA Day Skipper Syllabus is extensive and five days is not enough time to properly cover the underpinning theory for the first time whilst covering the practical syllabus with fellow crew. If you took the theory course some time ago it’s worth reading the Day Skipper theory and practical course notes books prior to joining us. Also, if you have limited sailing experience it’s worth considering a day or two on the water in a dinghy. This helps you hone your wind awareness, something which novice sailors sometimes find hard to master to the subconscious level required of a Day Skipper.

Alternatively, see our sailing adventures to gain further experience and confidence before completing your RYA Day Skipper practical course.
