GMDSS stands for Global Maritime and Safety System. It refers to an internationally agreed set of safety procedures, communication protocols and types of equipment aimed at increasing safety and making Air Sea Rescue safer and more effective.
The ultimate Qualification for professional seafarers is the GOS (General Operator’s Certificate). This can be STCW endorsed and enables commercial mariners to act as an officer in charge of communications. The short range GMDSS radio certificate enables the holder to operate short range GMDSS VHF radio equipment. This less comprehensive operator’s licence can be gained by undertaking a one-day course with an RYA approved Training Centre.
The syllabus focuses on obtaining a detailed working knowledge of the modern VHF radiot and agreed GMDSS operating procedures.
Those wishing to qualify as a Yachtmaster or to be skipper of a vessel will require a GMDSS Short Range Radio (SRC) Operator’s Certificate. There is no revalidation process once you have the certificate.
